It’s been a week since you’ve heard from me, I skipped my Wednesday and Friday posts last week for my birthday. So today’s post is a round up of everything I bought for myself on my birthday & what Peter gave me as a gift! But let me start off by saying I had the worst luck ever on my actual birthday (last Thursday) and my car had an electrical fire as we were driving home from Toronto..so I ended up with a huge tow truck bill as my main birthday present…which kind of put a damper on things but my birthday celebration on Friday night made up for it.
Okay lets jump into the good stuff, first up is makeup!
I always buy fresh makeup the day before my birthday, because lets face it… the first application with new makeup is magical to say the least.. and what better day to feel that magic than on my birthday!
On my actual Birthday Peter took me to the new Nordstrom in Toronto because we finally got one here! That was my one birthday request, but surprisingly I didn’t find much to buy that I thought was worth the price.
I know it’s sad that summer is coming to an end but I thought it would be fun to share some common “summer” activities that are actually better in the fall!
Hiking is actually much better in the fall, with the beautiful changing leaves and the crisp air keeping you from overheating on your walk. It’s also great because dangerous plants like Poison Ivy are more noticeable in the fall because they tend to change colour before other plants do. It’s believed to be less dangerous too once the plant oil draws back into the stem and roots of the Ivy and out of the easily accessible leaves.
I’m a huge summer camper as you may already know, but last year I went camping in the fall and actually preferred it over the summer. I found as long as you bring enough cozy blankets, the cooler temps made for much better sleeping! Also if your camping at a campground, the beaches and hiking trails are significantly less crowded which means you can hike at your own pace without worry of being stuck behind a group of slow walkers (LOL story of my life!).
Visiting Fruit Farms
Instead of boiling in the heat picking strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries, try apple or pumpkin picking in September/October. Most farms have hay rides, hot apple cider, and baked treats in the fall, so you can go to the farm and make a day out of it!
This probably isn’t something that everyone does but ATVing is one of my favorite outdoor activities in the summer and fall. I look forward to it the most in the fall because there’s a lot less rain compared to the summer so you don’t get nearly as muddy as you usually would, and going for a ride through the forest or A farm field in the fall is just so beautiful!
Baking is always fun but in the fall I enjoy it a lot more often, there are so many delicious desserts to make in the fall with apples and pumpkins! Basically all the best (in my opinion) treats are ones you can bake in the fall, like butter tarts, apple crisp, pumpkin pie, cinnamon caramel apple bread, or apple pies! In the cooler months I don’t mind having the oven running if I’m heating the house anyway, but I avoid running it in the summer unnecessarily because it’s so counterproductive.
I don’t know about you, but I’m just itching to start doing all these fun all activities!
As a continuation to my room tour post (here) today I’m sharing my desk details and makeup storage, with tips on how I keep it all organized. I am someone who has to be organized in order to be productive, so I thought sharing some of my tips might help motivate some of you to get organized and to feel empowered by it!
I use my desk for two things;
The first is to do my hair and makeup, so the left side of my desk houses my mirror, brushes, sponges, and Q Tips. As well as a tall chest of drawers beside my desk that holds all my products and hot tools.
And the second is to work on my blog, so the right side of my desk is home to my desk lamp, notebooks, and computer.
A Look Inside My Drawers!
I use one of the drawers in my desk to keep stationary supplies, I don’t know why but ever since I was a kid ‘back to school’ shopping was always my favorite because I loove stationary supplies. I find I always want to keep things organized when I get excited about whatever it is! So in this case, I made sure to buy lots of colourful supplies so the drawer wasn’t boring.
Tip: Keeping note pads and sticky notes on hand is key for writing down little reminders to yourself. I hate wasting a whole paper on something small, so instead of trying to ‘remember’ (& forgetting) I write it on a sticky!
Tip: I keep blank greeting cards in my desk encase I need a Thank You, or Birthday Card in a pinch!
In my other desk drawer I keep my agenda and laptop, this is where I charge and store my laptop when it’s not in use. Its nice to keep it off the desk because it makes my desk feel a lot more spacious while I’m doing my makeup ect.
Tip: If you have exposed drawers in your desk (like I do), run your computer charger cord into the drawer so you don’t have to look at messy cords on your desk!
My Makeup Storage
I bought a caboodle a few years ago and don’t know how I ever lived without it! This thing is amazing for makeup lovers like myself because it can store ALL your makeup in one spot. With all the little shelves to organize your products it makes for easy makeup applications, no more rummaging through makeup bags(Hurray)!
*Caboodles come in a bunch of different sizes, I believe mine is a medium sized one. Available here / or here in black.
Tip: I like to organize each shelf by order of each step I take while applying my makeup; This makes doing my makeup much faster because I know where everything is!
Shelf one – Primers, Foundations and Concealers
Shelf Two – Setting Powders, Bronzer, Blush, Highlighters
Shelf Three – Eye Shadows, and Eyelid Primer
Shelf Four – Eyeliners, Mascara, Eyebrow Pencils and Gels
The bottom area holds my pallets and other makeup that I don’t necessarily use everyday, as well as doubles of products for when I run out of something.
My Chest of Drawers
This piece of furniture is such a life saver, it’s just the right size to hold all my products neatly without taking up a lot of floor space. Which is exactly what I needed because I had a lot to store, and not a lot of floor space!
I was concerned that the shallow drawers would make for less storage space because I can’t stack things on top of each other, but I realized not being able to stack things is actually a blessing! By having all my products in a single layer I am now able to see everything and don’t ever forget or ‘misplace’ my things.
Here are a few pictures for reference!
My main trick to staying organized is to have all items for each purpose clustered together in their own separate drawers. For example – in the pictures above you can see I have a drawer strictly for self tanning supplies, a separate drawer for hair products, and a separate drawer for fragrances! This makes it super easy to see what I have and be able to find everything, which is really calming for my OCD haha!
Okay sorry for the long post today, I hope it wasn’t too confusing. If you have any questions feel free to leave me a comment down below!
Todays post isn’t my usual Friday Feature because I wanted to share some snaps of my trip to Killbear Provincial Park- the camp ground I go to every year with my family. I have been to this park basically every summer since I was a born, so it holds a lot of amazing memories for myself and my family.
My parents went up to the park on Thursday morning but Jess and I didn’t get up there until Saturday around dinner time(she had to work), so we ate with my parents and then went to catch the sunset from our favorite spot. It was a little cloudy but still beautiful <3
The next day was pretty overcast but we still managed to hang out on the beach for most of the day, then went for a hike to the lighthouse, got ice cream, and watched the sunset.
For the past couple years I always try to get a picture sitting beside this wind-swept tree at sundown!
Jess and I woke up at 5AM to catch then sunrise on the beach, It was beautiful but it was a little chilly and we were tired so we went back to bed when the sun came up and slept until 10! After that we hit the beach for the rest of the day, I read the entire time so the day flew by. We went on a hike after dinner and then back to our favorite sunset spot at sundown!
On our last day Jess and I wanted to take the Island Queen Cruise around Georgian Bay’s 30 000 islands. We see it drive by all the time when we’re on the beach at Killbear and have wanted to go on it for years, so this year we made it happen! My parents decided to join us too so it was a fun day spent together, and they even served Starbucks on the boat (my fav!).
After the cruise Jess and I headed for home. It was a short but sweet little vacation but we were happy to come home to our fur babies!
